Genicular Artery Embolization
Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE) is a non-surgical treatment procedure that can provide long-lasting pain relief for people suffering from pain in the joints. Pain in the joints is usually caused by wear-and-tear or overuse of joints. Elderly people and athletes typically suffer from this. In some cases, this procedure can prevent one from undergoing joint replacement surgery. This treatment alternative benefits people who do not want to undergo surgery or are unfit for the surgery.
The procedure is performed by an interventional radiologist with fluoroscopy guidance. A micro-catheter will be inserted into the femoral artery in the groin. The catheter is then guided to the genicular arteries, and tiny particles are injected to block the flow of blood to the knee joint. This can reduce hypervascularity, which increases stimulation in the sensory nerves, which is the root cause of pain. This is a short, daycare procedure.
GAE is widely approved in Japan and the US and has a high success rate that keeps rising. This procedure mainly treats the root causes of your joint pain, like hypervascularity, sensory nerve stimulations etc.
